ISDN – Really, it’s not as dead as you might think it is!

Todays second sponsor break is from ACC Telecom, a telecompany located in the Washington DC area. It’s not an ordinary internet services provider though, this one is paying a lot of extra attention to business phone systems and ISDN connections for companies – lots of ISDN connections.

Personally I thought ISDN was a nearly dead technique; here in Europe most countries, especially the Netherlands, have got up to 99% broadband coverage throughout the country, and with broadband I’m aiming at ADSL or cable connections with sometimes even up to 20mbit lines. However, according to an ACC Telecom article there are still quite a lot of benefits of an ISDN PRI phone system. You might wonder what the ‘PRI’ part means, luckily that’s pretty well explained in the article I’ve linked to, it basically means multiple lines, up to 23 in the US and 30 in Europe are combined into one smart internet connection.

Using such a connection you can either combine the lines and get one ‘mega tube’ for big file transfers, or have multiple reliable continuous data streams for things such as VOIP or live remote backup systems. Overall I suppose the usage of this technique would also result in lower costs, especially when your company is located in an area without existing broadband infrastructure; dedicated lines often cost more than several thousand dollars per meter and a lot of recurring costs – ISDN might not be as dead we the world thinks it is!

Also ich hätte echt nicht gedacht dass man die Sache auch so sehen kann. Es wundert mich wirklich selten was im Netz steht, aber dies ist schon irgendwie anders.
