Joomla for beginning webmasters & designers

trackimgA little intro for those who aren’t much into open source website systems or maintaining websites yet; Joomla is a pretty simple and easily expandable portal or more precisely, content management system, which is freely available on the web under the GNU GPL license; it’s fully open source.

However, even though Joomla is relatively simple to use as end user, the backend and process of making themes is way more difficult: every module or plug-in used with it has its own output and ordening of code, in addition to that no easy step-by-step guide comes with Joomla to do so. The guys of ClubTVK saw a market there I suppose, on their website they offer quite a nice list of documentation for Joomla.

But, the main part of the website was set up a bit more ‘commercially correct’, they offer two ebooks from their website. These books cover a couple of things, first of all a documentation of how Joomla works, making it easier to use the software and perhaps even less frustrating as Joomla does offer a lot of options. The second book is, in my opinion, more interesting though, this one covers how to make your own Joomla Templates using an easy mothod they’ve set out.

It seems like a set of interesting books, you can order them on their website using either a credit card or Paypal account, some sneak peeks are available as well in the form of free modules and themes, worth looking into if you’re using Joomla for one of your websites. I’d recommend it for relative ‘newbies’ to maintaining websites, for the more experienced I’d suggest looking further though as Joomla is fairly difficult to enhance with own code.

I’m new to using Joomla and after the first few bumps have really started to like it. Can anyone provide me a few suggestions for templates?
